Common Cold

DEFINITION

Is a viral infectious disease of the upper respiratory tract that primarily affect the nose,throat,sinues & voice box. Common cold is also known simply as cold.

CAUSITIVE ORGANISAM

Virus (more than 200 different virus are being involved)
 Rino virus
 Human para influenza virus
 Metapneumo virus
 Corona viruses
 Adeno virus
 Human respiratory syncytical virus
 Entero virus
Among these rino virus is the most common.

MODE OF SPREAD – Air borne
Direct or indirect contact with the infectious person.

SITE OF INFECTION Nasal pathway

INCUBATION PERIOD – 1 – 2 DAYS.

DURATION OF INFECTION

 1 week
 Mild attack – 2 – 3 days
 Severe attack – 2 weeks.

FREQUENCY OF ATTACK

o Adults – 2 – 4 cold a year.
o Children – 6 – 8 per year.

SYMPTOMS EXIBITED

Common symptoms
 Sore throat
 Sneezing
 Watery eyes
 Nasal obstruction
 Cough
 Head ache
 Chillness
 Taste lessens
 Exhaustion
Severe symptoms
 High fever
 Muscle ache
These are the evidence of flu rather than a cold.

COMPLICATION

 Acute bronchitis
 Pneumonia
 Acute bacterial sinusitis

HOW TO PREVENT

 Wash your hands thoroughly after touching the items that were in contact with an infected person.
 Keep a distance from the infected persons.
 Use face mask.
 Drink plenty of warm water.
 Steaming & gargling is advocated.

DIETS & REGIMENTS RECOMMENTED

DO’S
 Easily digesting food like porridge, soups etc
 Warm food stuffs is best.
 Luke warm water for both drinking and bathing.
 Chicken & vegetable soups with large portion of pepper is advocated.
 Complete rest is advocated.
DON’TS
 Avoid oily and fried food stuffs.
 Backed items are good to ignore.
 Cold food and drinks.
 Soft drinks .
 Milk products with high fat contents.
 Exposure to cold atmosphere.
 Avoid physical exertion.
 Avoid preheated & refrigerated foods.

HOME REMEDIES

 Drink plenty of luke warm water boiled with any one of ginger,pepper,tulasi leaves.

 Black coffee with either dry ginger or pepper use jaggery for sweetening is good sore throat.

 Steaming – water boiled with turmeric & tulasi leaves best for running nose.

 Gargling – saline luke warm water arrest sore throat.

 Drink honey for dry cough.

 Take honey mixed with pepper powder.

 Chewing of tulasi leaf is good for throat irritations.

 Equal amount leaf juice of adhatoda vasica and honey good for cough.
